While in a business meeting last night at `Ohana in Belltown, our friend Eric Rulona, a designer by profession, challenged us to post a blog every day for a month. We’ve accepted the challenge and start our daily commitment today with this post. Interestingly enough, this first entry takes us right back to the topic of `Ohana, as tonight’s show will be our last (at least for a while) at the spot where it all started…
Kore Ionz has been performing at `Ohana every last Wednesday of the month for eight years, and tomorrow night we say goodbye to the venue that laid down the foundation for everything our band has accomplished thus far. `Ohana is exactly what it says it is – an incredibly strong family multiplying every day. And as you walk through the front door on any given day, you become stronger because of the huge community that has your back. Well, that’s how we feel anyway.
For example, because of `Ohana we’ve become close to the Yamada family (nvrMT, da808seattle), who puts on the biggest island reggae shows in Seattle. In turn, because of the Yamada family, we’ve gotten to perform with Katchafire for the last three years, and last July went on the road with them! Never saw that coming eight years ago.
But it doesn’t mean we’re going away for good. It just means the full Kore Ionz eight-piece will be hiding out in the studio plotting the next big move. In fact, starting in September, Pak will be hosting a brand new night every last Wednesday he’s calling Pak & The Lolos, an open jam session featuring members of all the bands that currently play in the `Ohana rotation.
Kyle Yoshimura, we salute you and your amazing staff, and pledge to keep coming on a regular basis to eat and drink at your island-style oasis, and introduce more and more people to the `ohana. And we’re still working hard on the “First Avenue” video – don’t you worry! First day of shooting is coming sooner than you think!
Kore Ionz performs at `Ohana Belltown one last time tonight at 10pm. 2207 First Avenue, no cover, 21+.
